\pard\plain\f4\fs18\b When you taxi in windy conditions, you'll have to use some special techniques in order to keep positive control of the airplane. At slow speeds, when the wind is light, the controls aren't that effective. But, when air flowing over the airplane speeds up, the effectiveness of the controls also increases.
\par
\par The controls respond the same whether you're taxiing at 5 knots in no wind, or sitting still in a 5-knot headwind. The wind and taxi speed components can also work together. Say you're taxiing at 10 knots, and there's a 15-knot headwind.\plain\f4\fs18 \plain\f4\fs18\b The controls are going to respond to an airflow velocity of 25 knots.
\par
\par No matter what the wind speed is, you want to hold the yoke so the ailerons are neutral when you taxi into a headwind. Your chance of tipping over is low in a direct headwind since the wind flows under and over both wings equally.\plain\f3\fs17\b

\pard\plain\f4\fs18\b You should hold the yoke neutral, or a little bit forward, so that you can keep the elevator in a neutral or slightly down position. That way, you'll keep a normal amount of pressure on the nose gear.
\par
\par Holding the yoke too far forward when you taxi in a strong headwind can bring the tail up and the nose down. This increases the load on the nose gear and compresses the nose strut, which puts the prop closer to the ground. This normally wouldn't cause a problem, but if you taxi on an uneven surface, there's a chance the prop could hit the ground.\plain\f3\fs17\b

\pard\plain\f4\fs18\b When you taxi in a quartering headwind, the wind can get under the upwind wing, and tip the airplane toward the downwind wing. If you don't have the ailerons in the right position, the wind can lift the upwind wing, and cause you to have problems with directional control. In extreme cases, the wind can even flip the airplane over.
\par
\par To maintain control when you're taxiing in a quartering headwind, turn the yoke all the way in the direction that the wind is coming from, which puts the upwind aileron up. You need full deflection because the controls aren't very effective at slow taxi speeds.\plain\f3\fs17\b

\pard\plain\f4\fs18\b When you taxi in a tailwind, you need to position the controls carefully in order to counteract the effects of the wind blowing over the airplane.
\par
\par For example, if you're taxiing at 5 knots, and there's a tailwind of 15 knots, the controls react as if there was a 10-knot tailwind component flowing over them.
\par
\par However, if the wind is only at 5 knots, your taxi speed cancels the effect of the 5-knot tailwind, and the controls react as though there's no wind. If you stop, you'll notice that the controls will behave like the tailwind's increasing.\plain\f3\fs17\b

\pard\plain\f4\fs18\b Taxiing in a tailwind usually means you're going to use less power, since the wind has a tendency to push the airplane from behind, increasing your taxi speed. In a strong tailwind, you may have to pull the throttle back to idle in order to control your taxi speed.
\par
\par The tail can also be lifted by the wind, so you\plain\f4\fs18 \plain\f4\fs18\b have to make sure you've got enough tail-down force. You can do this by pushing the yoke all the way forward, which will put the elevator down. This causes the wind to strike the top of the elevator and exert a downward force on the tail. \plain\f3\fs17\b

\pard\plain\f4\fs18\b A quartering tailwind is the most critical wind condition for taxiing in a tricycle-gear airplane. The wind can get under the upwind wing causing the airplane to tip over onto the nose gear and one of the main wheels.
\par
\par To prevent this from happening, turn the yoke fully in the direction away from the wind. For example, in a right quartering tailwind, turn the yoke all the way to the left.
\par

\pard\plain\f4\fs18\b To help keep the tail down when you taxi in a quartering tailwind, hold the yoke all the way forward, so that the elevator stays down.
\par
\par Let's say you're taxiing with a right quartering tailwind, and you begin to slow down to make a turn to the right.\plain\f4\fs18 \plain\f4\fs18\b As your taxi speed decreases, the tailwind component increases, and the empennage could come up as a result.
\par
\par The airplane is also more likely to tip over in a turn, as the increasing crosswind component comes under the upwind wing. So, keep your taxi speed slow and even, and use caution when you enter turns. The key is to always be aware of the speed and direction of the wind, so you can avoid this hazard.\plain\f3\fs17\b
